Health And Safety Policy
Health and Safety Policy for Gardeners Motspur Park
Gardeners Motspur Park is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, subcontractors, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risks, preventing accidents and promoting safe working practices across our services.
Policy Aims and Objectives
The primary aim of this policy is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property arising from our work. We will achieve this by identifying hazards, assessing risks and putting in place effective control measures. We are committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance and to complying with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry guidance applicable to gardening, landscaping and grounds care activities.
Responsibilities and Accountability
Overall responsibility for health and safety within Gardeners Motspur Park rests with the company management. They are responsible for implementing this policy, ensuring that suitable resources are provided and that health and safety considerations are integrated into planning and decision making.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day to day implementation of safe systems of work, monitoring site conditions and ensuring that staff follow agreed procedures and use equipment correctly.
All employees and subcontractors are required to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. They must cooperate fully with Gardeners Motspur Park in implementing this policy, follow all instructions and training, use protective equipment and promptly report hazards, near misses, accidents and unsafe conditions.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting gardening or maintenance work, appropriate risk assessments will be carried out to identify potential hazards, such as uneven ground, manual handling tasks, use of machinery, exposure to chemicals, noise, dust, weather conditions and interaction with the public.
Based on the findings, Gardeners Motspur Park will adopt safe working practices including, where necessary, restricting access to work areas, using warning signs, scheduling tasks to minimise risks and ensuring that only trained personnel use specialist equipment.
Risk assessments will be reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes to work activities, equipment, locations or legislation.
Training, Information and Supervision
All staff will receive suitable induction training covering general health and safety requirements, emergency procedures, safe use of tools and machinery, manual handling principles and the correct use of personal protective equipment.
Where specific hazards are present, for example in the use of powered machinery or the handling of pesticides and other chemicals, additional task specific training will be provided. Only employees who have been assessed as competent will be authorised to use such equipment or substances.
Ongoing supervision will be provided to ensure that safe systems of work are followed and that any gaps in competence are identified and addressed through further training or mentoring.
Personal Protective Equipment
Gardeners Motspur Park will provide appropriate personal protective equipment at no cost to employees where hazards cannot be adequately controlled by other means. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing, respiratory protection and waterproof or protective clothing suitable for gardening tasks.
Employees are required to wear the personal protective equipment provided, maintain it in good condition and report any damage, loss or defects so that it can be repaired or replaced promptly.
Machinery, Tools and Equipment Safety
All machinery, tools and equipment used by Gardeners Motspur Park will be suitable for the tasks undertaken and maintained in safe working order. Regular inspections, servicing and, where necessary, formal testing will be carried out in line with manufacturer instructions and recognised safety standards.
Defective equipment must not be used and must be taken out of service immediately and reported to management. Only trained and authorised staff may operate powered tools and machinery such as mowers, hedge trimmers, strimmers, chainsaws and powered cultivators.
Chemicals, Fuels and Hazardous Substances
Where gardening activities require the use of chemicals, such as weed killers, fertilisers, fuels or cleaning products, Gardeners Motspur Park will assess the risks and ensure that they are stored, handled, transported and disposed of safely.
Safety data information will be made available for all hazardous substances and appropriate control measures, including ventilation, protective equipment and safe storage systems, will be implemented. Staff using such substances will receive specific training and must follow the instructions provided.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Many gardening tasks involve lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling and repetitive movements. Gardeners Motspur Park will seek to minimise manual handling risks by using mechanical aids, planning work to reduce heavy lifting and avoiding awkward postures where practicable.
Employees will receive instruction on safe lifting techniques and on how to recognise and report early signs of strain or discomfort. Where possible, loads will be split into manageable sizes and work will be varied to reduce repetitive strain.
Public and Client Safety
We recognise our responsibility to protect clients, visitors and members of the public who may be present while gardening work is taking place. Work areas will be planned and managed to minimise risks, including the use of barriers, signage or temporary exclusion zones where appropriate.
Loose tools, equipment and materials will be stored safely and areas will be kept tidy to prevent trips, slips and other incidents. Particular care will be taken when working near pathways, driveways, parking areas and shared communal spaces.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of work related ill health must be reported to management as soon as possible. Records will be kept and reviewed to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
First aid provisions will be made available on site or in vehicles as appropriate, and staff will be informed of the arrangements for obtaining first aid. Emergency procedures, including dealing with fire, serious injury and contacting emergency services, will be communicated to employees and reviewed regularly.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Gardeners Motspur Park will monitor compliance with this Health and Safety policy through site checks, equipment inspections, training reviews and investigation of incidents. Where shortcomings are identified, corrective actions will be implemented promptly.
This policy will be reviewed at regular intervals and whenever there are significant changes to our activities, relevant legislation or industry guidance. Updated versions will be communicated to all staff and will replace previous editions.
By working together and following this policy, Gardeners Motspur Park aims to maintain a safe environment for everyone involved in or affected by our gardening services.
